Dressing for your upcoming holiday office party can be a tough call especially when recommended attire is not mentioned in the announcement. Work-related holiday parties are somewhat trickier than social events in that a certain kind of office dress code is still expected. Here are a few quick guidelines to help you make your decision:

Keep professional. Even though you are among colleagues, you are also interacting with your boss and upper management, and maybe even clients who were invited.

Take things up a notch. Whether you are attending an evening cocktail event, or a daytime office celebration, do step it up from your normal dress attire and appearance.

For women choose darker seasonal colors and dressy fabrics for a more classy look during evening events. For daytime, wear dresses or skirts in thicker fabrics such as wool. Pair silk blouses with a beautiful blazer or cardigan. Avoid clothes that are too revealing.

For men, if you normally wear a suit, add personality with colorful socks, a colorful pocket square, cufflinks and tie bar. For daytime, consider the classic cashmere sweater. Choose seasonal colors and designs. Avoid overtly holiday themed patterns.
